El ROH Tag Team Championship fue introducido en la Compañía en Unscripted el 21 de Septiembre de 2002, donde ROH realizó un torneo para coronar a los primeros campeones. En ese momento ROH no disponía de los cinturones y los ganadores del torneo, Christopher Daniels y Donovan Morgan fueron reconocidos con un trofeo.
El título se convirtió en ROH World Tag Team Championship después de que los campeones Austin Aries y Roderick Strong ganaron a Naruki Doi y Masato Yoshino el 9 de Julio de 2006 mientras realizaban un tour por Japón con Dragon Gate. Desde entonces el título ha sido también defendido en el Reino Unido.
